Cosmetology is an area of pharmaceutical science and as such aims and research the creation and manipulation of new drugs – in this case cosmetics.

Extreme temperatures – cold and heat – dehydrate the lips, provided cuts and peeling, so to ensure the health of the lips is essential to drink plenty of water and hydrate with a suitable cream. Not all lip balms are environmentally friendly or safe for human health, so it is advisable (inclusive economically) “do it yourself” technique, in this way will ensure that there are no unnecessary compounds, hazardous or allergens.

The lip balm recipe requires few ingredients: a fatty base – vegetable oils are much more recommendable than animal fats – and a wax (beeswax or vegans: carnauba wax – Copernicia prunifera, recognized as the queen of waxes and is used in several areas, including the preservation of fruit).  For like option you can add food coloring, essential oils and flavors.

The glycerol (glycerine or propan-1,2,3-triol) is used in pharmacy and cosmetics and has sweeteners, wetting and antiseptic properties (helps to maintain the natural moisture of the skin).

Beeswax contains medicinal properties as an emollient (softens the skin), moisturizing and anti-inflammatory.

The sweet almond oil is a fat base with emollient properties, moisturizing and rich in vitamins and minerals. The sweet almond oil is neutral and therefore serves as base for the dilution of essential oils.

3.5 g Glycerol
20 g Sweet Almond Oil
5 g Beeswax

Optional ingredients

Essences, colorants, honey, anti UV and essential oils.

Preparation technique

Weigh the compounds separately. Take special care with the accuracy of the balance and spills / waste materials.

In a double boiler (Bain-marie), melt all the main ingredients  to obtain a clear or transparent shade.

Prove consistency: remove with a spatula or spoon a small amount of cream, cool and gently spread on the skin or lips. If the cream is not smooth, there must be added another 4 ml of oil and homogenize. As soon as everything is melted, remove from the heat source.

Add the desired additives. In the case of dyes, should not exceed 4 drops (for the amount of this preparation). Pay special attention to essential oils, their properties and dosage. The essences can generally be added to your liking (about 2 to 7 drops).

Store in a cream vial uncovered (while hot), otherwise can form cracks.

Shelf life, storage conditions and labelling

Use within 3 months of the date of preparation. Store at room temperature in tightly closed opaque containers and properly labeled with “external use”.
